There are several parts to a suspension system. When you are going offroading, the type of terrain that you will be covering determines which suspension allows you to keep the best control of your vehicle.

1. Coil Springs

• For lack of a better word, these are heavy duty Slinkies. They do very well for vertical energy, but they are not as recommended for side to side motion.

2. Leaf Springs

• These springs are comprised of multiple layers of metal in an arched shape. They may not offer as smooth a ride as coil springs, but they are more robust and handle weight better.

3. Torsion Bars

• Instead of using flexibility or compression to absorb energy, torsion bars twist to absorb the energy. This type of suspension is used primarily on the front end of a vehicle.

4. Shock Absorbers (Dampeners)

• Shocks soften the energy coming through the springs into your vehicle. Your suspension system is as defined by your shocks as much as it is the springs themselves.
