Thinking About A Lift Kit?

November 26th, 2016

You might remember the days when guys would stuff spacers into their suspensions or between the body and frame and call it a “lift kit”…and then would have Lift Kits in Humble TX no end of problems with handling, braking and drivetrain issues. Well, thankfully, those days are pretty much over.

If you’re considering putting a lift kit on your vehicle, ask yourself what your goal is with it, and what you intend to use the vehicle for. Do you expect a lot of off-road use like rock crawling or mud bogs, or do you just want a little extra clearance for bigger tires and the occasional off-pavement excursion?

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Go with reputable manufacturers for complete lift kits engineered to a specific year/make/model of truck or SUV. The suspension and drivetrain design on, say, a Ford F150 is drastically different from that of a Dodge Ram, and a lift kit should be specifically purpose-built for that vehicle.
  • Remember that the more radical the lift kit, the more it’s essentially a re-engineering of the vehicle’s steering geometry and drivetrain angles. The taller the lift, the more modifications might be needed for proper handling, steering, and road manners. Extended brake lines and other suspension-related parts might also be needed. In addition, big changes in angles of driveshafts and U-joints can result in vibration, roughness, and premature wear. That’s why a complete, comprehensive lift kit is so important.
